Med Jam 2018

The Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides will be organising the first ever Mediterranean Jamboree in the summer of 2018, from the 1st to the 8th of August. This event will be open for Scouts and Guides between the ages of 11 to 16 and it has the full support of the European Scout Region of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

It is expected that around 2,000 Scouts and Guides coming from different countries will be participating in this massive event. The participants will be divided into communities, within which they will interact by bridging cultures and discovering the cross roads, all while being in the centre of the Mediterranean.

Members from both associations are doing their utmost to give the participants the experience of a lifetime. Participants will be taking part in Scouting and Guiding activities, and will be given the opportunity to discover Malta.

Malta is a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean. It boasts 300 days of sunshine a year, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Due to Malta’s rich and busy history, there are numerous World Heritage Sites and astonishing attractions to be seen. We’re bilingual, whereby our two official languages are English and Maltese, which is a blend of Arab, English, French and Italian, testimony to the many colonial powers experienced by the Maltese. The welcoming and laid-back culture in Malta will make you want to stay, as will the delicious cuisine. Malta’s capital city, Valletta, is the European Capital of Culture of 2018.

Motto – Bridging Cultures

MedJam18 will focus on the personal development of the participating Scouts and Guides.  It will create an environment in which participants can exchange their experiences, knowledge and ideas. These exchanges will bridge different cultures and encourage participants to enhance fundamental values, whilst enjoying themselves in a wonderful environment.

Theme – Meeting at the Cross Road

Malta is considered as the gem of the Mediterranean. The strategic position of Malta, in the centre of the Mediterranean makes it a stepping stone for larger countries, hence creating the perfect location to bring Scouts and Guides from various countries together. Whichever direction one may be coming from- North, South, East or West- the cross roads will be Malta.

Venue – Ghajn Tuffieha National Campsite

The Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite is the Scout Association’s official campsite and is run by volunteers within the same Association. It is spread over nearly 16 acres of land in the vicinity of some of the most scenic Northern parts of Malta.

At the campsite, you have the opportunity to camp in a natural environment while a stone’s throw away is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Malta. The campsite is also located on a bus route and has a number of restaurants close by.

Facilities include over 20 camping plots each served with water and electricity, an open-air Greek theatre and a car park and ablution blocks with toilets and showers.

International Service Team (ISTs)

International Service Team (‘IST’) members are welcome from the ages of 18 years and over and will be fully integrated into the national staff teams. The working language will be English. There will be a variety of tasks that need to be carried out and sufficient time will be given to the staff to spend on socializing, enjoying the activities and developing partnerships. Additionally, a separate program for the ISTs will be developed.
